BACKGROUND
For this family, skiing is more than a pastime—it's a way of life. With a family history that includes accomplished Nordic and alpine skiers, collegiate competitors, and members of Olympic development programs, their connection to the mountains runs deep. Whitefish has been part of that story for generations. Having shared a family home on the mountain since the 1950s, they always knew this was where they wanted to put down roots.
While the skiing initially brought them to Whitefish, it was the community that inspired them to stay. Over the years, they have invested not only in a home, but also in the people, organizations, and lifestyle that make the area special. Perched on a dramatic mountainside site, the home was designed to embrace both its remarkable setting and the family's active lifestyle.
Expansive windows frame panoramic views that stretch from Whitefish Lake and Flathead Lake to the Columbia Range, Whitefish Range, and beyond. The home's elevated position creates a constant connection to the surrounding landscape, while thoughtfully designed gathering spaces provide the perfect setting for family, friends, and post-ski celebrations. Outside, a mountaintop pickleball court—we believe to be the highest, and certainly one of the windiest, in Montana—has become a favorite destination and a source of family pride.
The result is a home that reflects a family's enduring connection to Whitefish, the mountains, and the community they have helped shape for generations.
PROJECT NOTES
The home's steep mountainside location presented a unique opportunity to capture some of the most expansive views in the Flathead Valley. Careful site planning and window placement were essential to maximizing sightlines while creating comfortable and functional living spaces throughout the home.
Designed around an active, multi-generational lifestyle, the residence seamlessly balances recreation and gathering. Whether returning from a day on the slopes, hosting friends and family, or enjoying a competitive pickleball match above the valley floor, the home serves as a natural extension of the lifestyle that first brought the family to Whitefish decades ago.
